Influencer marketing or UGC: which one does a UAE brand actually need?

Both put a real person in front of your product. What you are paying for is completely different.

Brands in Dubai often ask for “influencers” when what they really want is content that looks like a real customer recommending them. Sometimes they need an audience. Sometimes they just need better ads. Knowing which is which saves a lot of budget.

Influencer marketing: you pay for the audience

With influencer marketing, a creator posts about you on their own account to people who already follow and trust them. You are buying reach and borrowed credibility with a specific audience.

  • Best for launches, new locations, events and building awareness quickly in a specific community or emirate.
  • Works when the creator's followers actually match your customers, by location, language and interests.
  • In the UAE, creators promoting brands must hold a UAE Media Council Advertiser Permit. Here is what to check.

UGC: you pay for the content

With UGC, a creator films content in the style of a real customer, but it is published on your accounts and usually run as ads. Their follower count does not matter. What matters is whether the video makes people stop scrolling and believe it.

  • Best for performance ads on TikTok, Instagram Reels, Snapchat and Meta, where native looking content usually beats polished commercials.
  • Lets you test many hooks and angles cheaply, then put budget behind the winners.
  • Works especially well for e-commerce, beauty and skincare, food, apps and clinics.

How to choose

  • If nobody knows your brand yet and you need attention, start with influencers.
  • If you are already running ads and want them to convert better, start with UGC.
  • If you are opening a branch or launching a product, combine both: creators for the launch, and their best content turned into ads afterwards.

The combination that works best

The most efficient campaigns we see use creator content twice. A creator posts to their audience, the posts that perform best are identified, and those are then run as Spark Ads or partnership ads from your account, reaching far more of the right people. For that to work, usage rights need to be agreed before the shoot, not after.

Questions

Usually per piece of content, because you are not paying for the creator's audience. The real cost depends on how many videos and versions you need.

They should look and sound like your real customers. Experience on camera matters more than follower count.

You own the usage rights you agree in the contract, so agree them clearly before filming, including paid ad usage.
